Earlier this month we were lucky enough to have renowned
fibre artist Valerie Wartelle come and talk to us about her work.
Brought up in France, she came to the UK to study Textile
Design, specialising in knitwear. After graduating she worked in the fashion
industry for many years. When a friend introduced her to wet felting she loved
the technique and started experimenting with the process. She discovered that
slowing the felting process down enabled her to have more control over the
finished product. She incorporates pieces of silk fabric, fibres, threads and screen-printing
into her work. The landscape wall pieces that she creates are beautiful.
She also runs workshops on felt making which I hope to
attend sometime in the future.
