Dionne Swift

Dionne Swift (often referred to as the “Devoré Lady”) came to Harrogate last week to talk to us about her career as a textile artist. She brought lots of beautiful samples of her work which she passed around so we could all have a closer look.

Dionne told us how both her grandmothers had influenced her by teaching her how to sew and how to improvise by adapting knitted or smocked garments. Having studied at Goldsmiths she went on to lecturing, setting up a studio and exhibiting.

Few people manage to earn a living from their creativity but Dionne’s enthusiasm about her work and her drive to succeed impressed us. Her new work involves printing with collographs onto thick felt with the addition of hand stitches.

I’m sure we’re not the only branch out there who struggle to fill committee posts when someone steps down.

Our Chairman stepped down this year after doing more than her fair share of years but was worried no one would come forward to replace her. Without a chair it is very difficult for a branch to continue so we came up with an idea that other branches may decide to use if they find themselves in the same situation – job share.

We now have 3 chairmen -

Diane Freeman, Lorna Batten, Yvonne Arnston who will liaise and organise the work between them. Heather Kay has taken over as Treasurer and Yvonne Wilman will continue on as Secretary.

A big thank you to Jacqui and Norma for all the work they have put into the branch over the years.

The AGM was followed by a talk from Janet Strain entitled “Knickers! – A Brief History”

I didn’t realise just how fascinating knickers could be! Before Janet began speaking she donned a red hat and at first I just thought she was slightly eccentric but then several ladies started laughing. I had never come across the phrase “red hat no knickers!” Janet had to remove the hat because she certainly had an abundance of knickers with her! Did you know that until the end of the 18th century, "decent" women had always gone knickerless? Drawers were originally worn only by men but, due to changes in fashion, women increasingly adopted them. Janet’s talk was both very informative and humorous. I shall never look at my knickers it quite the same way again!

I’m sorry for the lack of blogs – life has a habit of getting in the way!

Here is an update of what has been going on at the Harrogate branch.

In September we had a wonderful talk by Liliane Taylor. Liliane is a contemporary textile artist who uses natural fabrics and vintage fabrics in her work. She works mainly from her drawings to produce figurative work and beautiful landscapes. She brought lots of samples of her work. I always feel a mixture of inspiration and desperation at my own work when we have such a high calibre textile artist. To see more of her work visit her website by clicking on the link below.

At the end of September we had a workshop run by Hillary Hollingworth. Having already given a talk earlier in the year we were all eager to have a go at some darning ourselves. Rather than working straight from a photo Hilary got us to make a collage of our photo using old magazine pictures. This was a very interesting exercise as it made you focus on the colours carefully and observe shading and form. It also meant that you then had a new image to work from that was not an exact copy but had the essence of the original image. We thoroughly enjoyed our day and I hope to get some images of completed work to put on the blog!

Isobel Hall - Mixed media books with stitched spines

Last Saturday Isobel Hall taught a workshop on how to create mixed media hard backed books with an open embroidered spine.

The morning consisted of experimenting with various mixed media techniques. We used encaustic wax, paints, chalky pastels, alcohol inks and light moulding paste with stencils and stamps on textured paper to create different backgrounds. Different techniques were layered one on top of another to create unique paper backgrounds for embroidering into. This was very messy but oh so enjoyable!

Next came the stitching of the pages together to form the inside of the book. I must admit that I found this part quite fiddly and frustrating at times. However when I tried again at home I found it much easier and got hooked!

It was a very full but enjoyable day and we ran out of time so no books were actually finished on the day.

I do hope to see several completed books at the next meeting so that other members can see what a great workshop they missed.

Priscilla Jones

Priscilla Jones treated us to a wonderful talk with lots of slides showing her work and beautiful drawings from her to degree work up to the work she is currently creating. She also brought along a range of her embroidered canvasses, 3D sculptures and cards for us to see. Having seen her work featured in many magazines it was wonderful to see them in the flesh. Her 3D sculptures of cups and teapots, created from wire, fabric and wax, were particularly enthralling. Her subtle use of colour and amusing images made her embroidered canvasses very appealing. What a delightful afternoon!

Regional Day

Several members attended the Regional day and what an enjoyable day it was. There were two excellent speakers and a much improved lunch. There were lots of wonderful entries for the various competitions and a member of the Harrogate branch won the "Challenge Cup". The theme was "A Confection" and Irene Earl created her own version of "Bertie Bassett" as pictured below.

I was particularly impressed with the number of entries by children for the “Pass It On” challenge set by the Ryedale Branch with the theme “Flowers”.

Last Saturday Hillary Hollingworth came to talk about her work. Hillary has stitched from an early age, her grandmother taught her to crochet and darn. She now puts her darning skills to more creative use, producing fantastic textile pieces. When designing pieces Hilary often starts by making collages from her personal photographs and then uses these to transfer a new image to fabric. Then the darning begins!

“Mini Books” – Workshop with Linda Westerman

What a great day! Linda brought lots of examples of her mini books made from pelmet Vilene. I particularly liked the ones that looked ancient. As the room was unsuitable to do any burning we couldn’t create the books on the workshop but I had a go at home and was very pleased with the result.

Malvhina Sculpture

At long last I have found time to thank all the members of Harrogate Branch of the Embroiderers' Guild for their lovely card and leaving gift. The vouchers will be put to good use to purchase some new plants for our large garden. I am already missing everyone but will be watching the Harrogate Blog to ensure you are keeping it alive and interesting. What I have seen so far is impressive. Am missing everyone already but the amount of work that needs doing to the house and garden is daunting.

Stitch Morning 9th April

Despite the glorious weather we had a successful stitch morning with lots of people working on pieces for our exhibition at the end of June. Here are a few snippets of work in progress and some finished pieces for our theme “Beyond the Canopy”.

Our afternoon speaker was Denise Musk. Denise is an author of many books on machine knitting. She has taken a new approach to knitting, incorporating machine embroidery to create fabrics, garments and bags. A few workbooks were on show at the start of the talk but from her “tardis” she pulled out one garment after another until a whole rail of garments were on display and the table was piled high with goodies.

Pauline Hannon was elected as the new Chairman of the Embroiderers' Guild at the AGM in Dundee so hope you will all give her your full support.

Sue Giles, former, Chairman of the City of York Branch, and Jeni Turner, current Treasurer of Huddersfield Branch, have recently been co-opted onto the Yorkshire & the Humber Regional Committee. With Hazel's impending departure on 13th April more regional committee members are still required so please do contact Elizabeth Johnston if you are at all interested. You can come along to a committee meeting as a visitor if you want to see what is involved! It helps to spend one year on the committee getting to know the ropes before taking on a more specific role.

Textures in Felt

We had a fabulous felt making workshop today with Alyson Evans. Alyson showed us various methods to create textures in felt such as attaching things to the surface, placing objects in the middle of the felt, using resists, cutting and manipulating the wet felt. Her clear instructions, encouragement and her obvious love of felt making got us all keen to create our own masterpieces! She was always on hand to offer advice and help when required but also encouraged everyone to experiment and try out their own ideas. Although quite tiring, it was a most enjoyable and productive day.

RAINBOW SQUARES

For those of you who did not manage to get to the exhibition at The Quilt Museum, York the photograph above shows the majority of the rainbow squares produced by the members of the Yorkshire & the Humber Region of the Embroiderers' Guild.

Unfortunately there were still 2 or 3 branches squares missing. For one reason and another we have never yet achieved hanging them all together, but at least this time they were much better colour co-ordinated. Our very grateful thanks go to the Museum staff and volunteers for putting on such an excellent display for us.

Buttons, Buttons, Buttons

Everything in the garden is rosie. Sue very kindly brought her winning button along to Coffee and Stitch on Tuesday at West Park URC so I got chance to take a photograph. With the wonders of technology I have made a whole row of them for you to see.

The other good news was the amount of money we raised for the church through the sale of our christmas stars. I believe it was £63.45. Thanks to all of those who made this such a success.

Terry Murphy, the acting Chief Executive Officer of The Embroiderers' Guild, will be available to answer members questions at a special meeting arranged for 2.00 pm on Saturday, 15 January 2011 at Scarcroft Village Hall. Refreshments will be available.

This meeting has been convened in response to the concerns raised by members at the Regional Annual General Meeting held in October 2010. It is hoped members will take this opportunity to meet Terry, raise any queries they may have, listen to the answers and also hear first hand about the current situation of The Embroiderers' Guild.

Stumpwork Workshop Tuesday 8 March 2011

Nicola Hulme (one of the excellent tutors from the 2010 Regional Residential Summer School) will be providing a 1 day Stumpwork Workshop for EG Members 10.00 - 4.00 pm on Tuesday, 8 March 2011 at The Quilt Museum and Gallery, St Anthony's Hall, Peasholme Park, York. The cost for the day is £30 and a choice of kit will be available to purchase of either 'Autumn Berries' or 'Mushrooms & Fauna'.

Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided, however, delegates will need to bring a packed lunch.

Obituary

It is with sadness that we have to advise that Margaret Downes, a very experienced and talented embroiderer, and a member of the Harrogate branch of The Embroiderers' Guild has died recently. She was a delightful person, always willing to join in with whatever we were doing, and a regular visitor to the Stitch and Chat sessions at West Park URC each month.

The photograph above was taken at the branches 30th birthday party in 2009 and the inset piece of embroidery is a Ruskin Lace needlecase made by Margaret.

We will all miss her very much.

Christmas Star Turn

The snowy weather did not deter those who turned out for coffee and scones on Tuesday. Pre-hanging nerves were put to rest as there were plenty of stars to hang on the tree. The stars are to be sold by West Park URC to raise much needed funds at a sum of not less than £1.00 each.

If you have any completed stars, or just want to pop in to see the tree, why not visit the coffee shop between 10.30 am and 12.00 noon on the days that it is open. You can add your star(s) to the tree whilst you are there.

There are still some of the Irene Angel cards left if you would like to purchase them. They cost £1.00 each or a pack of 5 costs just £4.50.

What a fabulous time we all had over the weekend of 13/14 November at The Quilt Museum with Tracy Franklin. A Retreat Weekend, including a sandwich lunch with one day of Crewel work and one day of Goldwork. You all missed a treat. We also got the chance to view the "Freedom To Stitch" exhibition in the main gallery which was an added bonus and, of course, there was a bit of retail therapy in their excellent shop.

TALK BY JANET TAYLOR

In October the talk given by Janet Taylor on the work based on the Luttrell Psalter created by the Lincoln Bailgate Branch of the Embroiderers' Guild proved to be as exciting and interesting as anticipated. The examples of pieces from their exhibition which she had brought along to illustrate her talk were wonderful. We were introduced to all the fantastic beasts that had inspired the stitchers and it was revealed that these creatures had all been given nicknames.

The Luttrell Psalter contains an interesting record of everyday rural life as well as beautiful illumination on all the pages.

Members were not surprised to learn that the Luttrell Psalter contained so much inspirational material within it that a lifetime of work could be generated from it. Janet hinted that, although this prospect was very tempting, they were actually planning another similar project but based on different local source material.

Gawthorpe Hall

Ohhhhh .... what a day out you all missed.

Ten members visited Gawthorpe Hall, at Padiham near Burnley on Wednesday, 4 August and spent a fantastic day looking through boxes of embroidery. We had requested metal thread and surface stitchery, but could not have guessed at the quality and beauty of the work we would be allowed to handle and see.

On arrival we all eyed up the boxes with eager anticipation, particularly as we had spyed the name Beryl Dean on one of them, but after lunch further surprises awaited us when more boxes were introduced with whitework, samplers and Elizabethan pieces. Information overload became a problem and we all want to visit again to focus on our own particular areas of interest.

Tracy Gill, our host for the day, kept the best to last. She introduced us to a magnifying glass attached to a laptop computer which enabled us to look at the embroidery in great detail. Most members decided they could never achieve the level of expertise required to produce such fine pieces of work as the samples we saw.

The whole outing was a huge success from start to end and the wet weather did nothing to dampen our spirits.

Hearts, Tarts and Rascals

Bettys very kindly treated Irene Angel to afternoon tea after seeing the delightful picture she embroidered of Bettys Harlow Carr. As many of you will know Irene celebrated her 95th birthday recently and can actually only sit and embroider for very short periods at a time. She always takes up whatever challenge we dream up for you all and it was a great pleasure to be able to take her to Bettys tea rooms at Harlow Carr to enjoy both the scenery and the food.

Harrogate Photographic Society

There were 12 pieces of work completed for the exhibition based on the photographs obtained from the Harrogate Photographic Society during the past year.

Having now seen what we can do with their images they are eager to work with us on our theme for next year which is the United Nations Year of the Forest title "Under the Canopy".

I am sure all the members of the Harrogate branch having seen this year's work will be queuing up for copies of photographs to be used as inspiration for their embroidery and textile pieces for next year.

WEST PARK EXHIBITION - 'Bettys' Theme

Everyone who has visited must agree that we have had a wonderful response to our 'Bettys' theme .... the most exciting piece of work is the picture of Bettys Harlow Carr by our oldest member, Irene Angel. A photograph will be posted shortly - we need to take the glass off the front to be able to do it justice.

The fabric and knitted cakes and chocolates are sumptuous and look good enough to eat. No calories there girls!!

At long last I have found time to put the photographs up onto the Blog that I was given by Maggie. Anyone recognise themselves? The choice of workshop was - either playing with Painted Bondaweb, Angelina or Walnut Ink, with an additional choice of creating a cake hanging to be assembled by Wendy using the samples made by members in shades of yellow and pink. Our exhibition in June/July will reveal the results.

Several members are also involved in stitching pieces based on inspiration taken from several photographs we have obtained from the Harrogate Photographic Society ready for our joint exhibition at West Park United Reformed Church. We aim to 'join up' in the middle of the exhibition with examples of their photographs and our embroidery based on these pictures. They may be in for a surprise!!!

CAROL COLEMAN WORKSHOP

Oh what bliss .... a whole day to play

The Carol Coleman workshop was just what was needed after a few hectic weeks. Above you can see Carol's demonstration piece showing how to make a cord with a toggle on the end, and also how to create various edgings and dangling bits on dissolvable fabric.

Irene tried her best not to use her favourite colours and, inspired by some photographs of rock formations obtained from a member of the Harrogate Photographic Society, this is what she came up with.

Typical of Carol's work, the piece above is heavily stitched and is enhanced with pieces of metal and semi precious stones to great effect.

A newcomer to the Guild meetings and also a City & Guilds 1st Year student at Harrogate College, Jackie created this very decorative piece that may become a brooch or something similar. The shiny background is due to the fact that the dissolvable film had not yet been washed away. Beads are to be added before this happens. Everyone had a terrific day with Carol proving to be an excellent choice of tutor.

Accomplished and inspiring works from the Richmond and Leyburn Embroiderers' Guild, set in the context of historic samplers from all over Swaledale, on public show for the first time. This exhibition is one of a programme of events to celebrate the 30th Swaledale Festival.

Scunthorpe and District branch of the Embroiderers' Guild stage an exhibition featuring members embroidery from the last ten years, including a new body of work created especially for 2010 entitled 'Windows'. There will be additional exhibits by members of the branch and church.

Admission is free and refreshments will be available.

If you visit on Saturday 29 May the branch will be hosting a Stitch Club in the morning and a Practical Session in the afternoon in the adjacent church hall. Visitors are welcome to look, join in and sample the stalls and demonstrations.

FOLLIES OF FASHION - APRIL 2010

Minute parasols, shoes, stockings, costumes and cakes, to itemise just a few of the spectacular pieces of work that Serena Partridge brought along with her to illustrate her talk and slide show. An excellent afternoon.
Serena is currently Textile Artist in Residence at The Mercer Art Gallery in Harrogate and her work will be included in the "Inspired by Heritage" exhibition from 12 June - 18 July at the gallery.

In addition there is an opportunity to participate in a "Mini Paper Shoes" workshop withh Serena 10 am - 4 pm on Tuesday, 6 July at a cost of £15.00. If you are interested please contact the Museum direct.

We have another five Story Sacks to hand over to Harrogate Children's Library for Story Telling sessions. They are fantastic and just show what talent we have among our members. Above we have one of the characters from "Aliens Love Underpants".

Royal Maundy Celebrations

It was wet and cold, however, several members braved the unwelcoming weather and put on a display of information and examples of work connected with medieval embroidery in the grounds of Knaresborough Castle on Saturday 3 April.

Chairman, Jacqui, came up trumps with some boards from her City & Guilds studies and also created two pieces to be worked in the style of the Bayeaux Tapestry based on the Maundy ceremony with King John presenting the people of Knaresborough with Maundy money. The late Dr Arnold Kellet discovered that Knaresborough was the location of the first prsentation of Royal Maundy money 800 years ago.

It was encouraging to be able to demonstrate some simple stitches to children who were accompanied by their parents and grandparents all of whom were keen to go home and continue stitching! Also extremely interesting was chatting to the enactment people who were using a lucet, demonstrating tablet weaving and cooking food from the period.

You have all been invited to the May meeting of Nidderdale Branch of the EG. The speaker is Gillian Stapleton . The talk is from the stable of the people who do the "Undressing Mr Darcy" series. It promises to be very good. The description says:

"A fascinating account of how costume historian Gillian Stapleton researches and creates the lovely replica corsets, costumes and bonnets of the History Wardrobe."

There is a small charge of £2 and you will receive a cup of tea and a biscuit at the end. If anyone would like to go and needs a lift please speak to a committee member.

14 members of the branch had a load of messy and dirty fun on Saturday, 27 February. Dawn Turner kindly stepped in at short notice to fill the gap when Sandra Kedzlie was unfortunately unable to be with us. Everyone took home 3 or 4 background pieces of work and all thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Just what was needed to cheer us up after all this glum weather we have been having.

MARCH MEMBERS DAY

Can you believe that using the same foundation pieced pattern two pincushions can come out different sizes? Well they did! These are just one of the delights we have in store for Members Day on Saturday, 12 March. Bettys cakes in fabric, more small sketchbook covers and one or two other surprises are awaiting members. Just bring a sewing kit and plenty of enthusiasm and you will have an enjoyable day.

FEBRUARY COFFEE AND STITCH

Some stitching actually went on at West Park in February and there was an excellent turn out of members, although the weather was still pretty chilly. Margaret Downes and Chris Staniforth have a combined membership of around 60 years between them!! Something to be very proud of. The knowledge and expertise that long term members of the branch pass on to others is invaluable, particularly as we have several new members who are eager to learn.

The volunteer staff at West Park always make us very welcome, in addition to free biscuits there are always scones, sometimes cakes and always a top up of tea and coffee after your first cup. So with the weather improving get along to our next Coffee and Stitch and enjoy the company.

Managed to get to the ULITA exhibition in Leeds which included a selection of work from the Yorkshire Branch @ Leeds which celebrated 75 years in 2009. It was very difficult to photograph as everything was in glass cases, but the above gives some idea of the range of work on display from the very early days up to some of the competition entries by members in 2009. Unfortunately the exhibition ends shortly, but there will then be other textile pieces from the ULITA archive on display.

Duttons for Buttons

We were so lucky with our choice of speaker for January - not only did Michelle Horton live within walking distance of Russell Sergeant House, but she also gave a fantastic talk with lots of buttons and books to look at. Considering the snow, we had a very good turn out of members and visitors.

Michelle gave the first of two talks about the history of buttons. Everyone is now eager to get her back to give the second talk.

Unfortunately, Sandra Kedzlie has had to cancel her February workshop due to ongoing health problems. We are endeavouring to find an alternative tutor and will keep you informed.

CHRISTMAS STARS

The picture above shows some of the entries in our annual competition. Please ignore the size of them all as it was a montage of several pictures and some appear much larger than they actually were.

What a fantastic in-house Christmas Lunch we all had. 26 members were able to join in the festivities. There would have been more, unfortunately, illness took its toll and one or two were unable to make it. Many thanks go to our Chairman and her trusty team who shopped and prepared everything.

The Christmas Competition posed its usual problems with not only one draw, but two. We had to re-vote for 1st and 2nd places and also for 3rd and 4th. The latter was a draw again, at which point we left it at joint 3rd. Eileen Sweeney was the eventual winner, with Leah Cox in second place. Joint third were Val Horner and Heather Kay. A very great achievement for Heather, as she has only started stitching since joining the Embroiderers' Guild.

Well done everyone and please do not throw away your stars as we may decorate a Christmas Tree again next year for the Christmas Tree Festival - and you guessed it - we will be making stars!

ST PETER'S CHRISTMAS TREE

Our trusty Chairman took down the tree on Monday 7 December and the feedback she received was very postive. Although we did not win the competition, we were third, there had been much admiration of our contribution and the church very much appreciated the effort made by our members. The birds will be sold at St Peter's from Sunday 13 December to raise money for charity.

The Christmas Tree Festival had received in excess of 500 visitors over the week with the tree created by a local school receiving the most votes. It's not the winning its the taking part that counts. I think you will all agree it was an excellent opportunity to promote the Embroiderers' Guild to the local community and one which hopefully we can repeat next year.

THE BIRDS HAVE FLOWN

HAPPY CHRISTMAS ..... between 50 to 60 birds have flown the coop and landed on a festive tree in St Peter's Church, Harrogate. (opposite where Boots used to be)

This large and fluffy specimen was created by Alyson Evans and he made himself at home perched on one of the signs.

The Christmas Tree Festival is open daily from Tuesday 1 - Sunday 6 December between 9 am and 5 pm. Funds will go to feed the homeless so it is all in a good cause. Look out for the bell ringers tree. If you do not see it you are bound to hear it!

"Blast from the Past"

Anthea Linacre discussing the wonderful Sunday best Apron brought along by Chris Staniforth which had been worn by her grandmother. In the foreground are some of the pieces of Mola work from the San Blas islands which were Sue Smith's contribution to the day.

What a successful meeting the November one turned out to be. Members surprised everyone with the wealth of interesting items they brought along. The photograph above is a montage of the pages from Jacqui's grandmother's school needlework book showing some of the samples.

There were pieces of needlework produced when people had been much younger, textiles and embroideries from many different countries, there were even two identical embroidered transfers worked by different members which had appeared in Woman and Home in the mid-40's.

The day was so successful that it could feature in the branch programme again.

In International Year of Natural Fibres Ulita are highlighting their use in textiles across the globe, with selections from their constituent collections including silks from Qing Dynasty China, cashmere shawls, Mediterranean embroideries of linen and silk, Javanese batik cottons, an embroidered ship cloth from Sumatra, ikats from Indonesia, crafted items from NZ, W Africa, Malysia, Turkey as well as various 20th C textiles.

The exhibition is complemented by samples from the EG Yorkshire Branch @ Leeds archive and the work of present members, including the results of this year's competition based on the theme of 'Natural Fibres'.

AUGUST COFFEE AND STITCH

West Park United Reformed Church were ready for us this month. A really good turn out of members who came along to chat, sew and enjoy the coffee and scones. Quite a few birds in evidence. Heather Kay (pictured) needed a little assistance, Irene Angel added stitching to hers and Norma Preston had completed 2 more. However, Alyson Evans caused a stir when she started to add needlefelted details to the lovely felt parrot she was working on!

Several green squares under construction and everyone appeared to be working on projects which have been lurking around for a while awaiting completion. Future dates are:-

The sight of the birds led to our being asked if we would like to produce Christmasy items to sell at the Church coffee mornings at the end of November and throughout December with a small percentage of the sales income going to the church. Sounds like a splendid idea so will keep you posted.

West Park Coffee and Stitch - July 2009

What an excellent 2 hours at West Park United Reformed Church. There were a good number of members there enjoying coffee and cakes. It was interesting to see the stitching that was being undertaken, several pieces from Pannal, a couple of pincushions from Josie Storey's workshop, an embroidered bird for the Christmas Tree in December. The general feeling was that it was a huge success and everyone is looking forward to the 25 August meeting.

We also had a new story sack - Duck in the Truck (complete with duck).

WEEK 1 - Pannal Textile Group

Someone should tell Lesley that grapes do not make good beads and Eileen looks like she should have her tongue out to aid concentration!

The discovery of a vicar who was interested in textiles really threw everyone on the first of the three Monday sessions of the Pannal Textile Group. Pannal Church and surrounding area is bursting with ideas for the budding textile artist and, apart from a short burst of rain in the morning, the day was a huge success.

There was an interesting mix of ladies from various backgrounds and they all learned something about layering, Bondaweb, Tyvek, Xpandaprint, discharge printing and Lutradur. Several people had started the process of putting together their handmade sketchbooks and others were given packs to enable construction of the books at home during the forthcoming week.

Much tea and coffee, together with Flapjack and Carrot Cake sustained delegates. All are eagerly awaiting Monday No 2!

July Talk - Kerry Mosley

Kerry Mosley is a textile artist who has only recently started to give talks on the work she does and the route that took her there. A lifelong love of drawing and the opportunity to return to part-time study when her children were small, led her into the world of textile art. She uses scientific wire and beads to knit a background upon which she then machine stitches using dissolvable fabric to add more detail to the organic forms and portraits she creates. She has come a long way since her first initial drawings of fruit such as lemons and pomegranates and currently has an exhibition at The Biscuit Factory in Newcastle upon Tyne.

The sun came out, we had lots of visitors and the little Pink Pig books you all made covers for at the Members Day sold like hot cakes. Hope you all managed to visit the exhibition?

We welcomed people from several other branches too including: Yorkshire Branch @ Leeds, Grassington, Nidderdale and Darlington. Best of all, we had people from Harrogate who did not even know we existed plus there were some people interested in the City & Guilds Course at Harrogate College.

Did any of you look at the Photographic Society work? Couldn't you just stitch some of those glorious textures - perhaps a thought for future exhibitions?

Green Rainbow Squares

Bankfield - The Happy People

One or two members managed to visit 'The Happy People' exhibition at the Bankfield Museum recently. It ends on 5 July. There are a range of costumes, artefacts and photographs of the Miao minority people of South West China. It is a fascinating display and the embroidery is exquisite. All decided they were too old to be considered to undertake any of the needlework as there was a very limited period during which the Miao people were able to achieve the exacting standards required. One assumes their eyesight was damaged by the microscopic detail involved in producing the designs.

It was nice to see one of the actual Miao books, with all its pockets, used for storing embroidery threads. Some members had actually attempted to make one of these at a workshop in the Summer of 2008. There was a second type of book on display which might be worthy of further investigation for a future project!

Members Day Lunch

What a tremendous turn out for the Members Day on 20 June. We had 42 people in total. There were several special guests who found the old branch photograph albums that Cath Chew brought along, of great interest. Everyone enjoyed a lovely buffet lunch with wine and soft drinks followed by a small sewing project in the afternoon. Many members delivered their pieces of work ready for the exhibition which starts on 30 June at West Park United Reformed Church.

Four more story bags were delivered - Rainbow Fish, The Big Red Bath, Mog and Bunny and The Tiger Who Came to Tea. We have some very talented people among our membership. All of the thirteen completed story sacks will be on display at the exhibition which is open

Whitework with Tracy Franklin

Recognise anyone? Several members of Harrogate branch of the Embroiderers' Guild joined City & Guilds students on a summer workshop at the Quilt Museum in York recently.

Tracy Franklin tutored the excellent one day workshop on contemporary whitework. Everyone learned something new and are eager to have her back again to do another day, perhaps Goldwork next time.

Story Sacks

We have just heard that Waitrose have selected the Harrogate branch of the Embroiderers' Guild together with Harrogate Children's Library to be one of the three charities during June participating in their 'Community Matters' scheme. They divide £1000 between the three charities according to how many green tokens are put in the voting box - so during June get to Waitrose and put your tokens in our box.

The money will be used to purchase props for the Story Sacks we are making for Harrogate Children's Library. Any surplus funds will provide materials to make some floor mats and cushions for babies to use whilst their parents are in the Library plus, hopefully, a new wall hanging when the Library returns to its refurbished premises.

Harrogate City & Guilds Show

Apart from finding time to stitch together Harrogate branch green rainbow squares, there was lots of lovely work and plenty of visitors over the week of the college exhibition. There were only two Part 2, Yr 2 students this year, but their work was exciting.

The Part 1, Yr 1 students are a talented lot and there was some fantastic artwork and stitching amongst their display of work. Well done. Finally, against all the odds, the Part 1, Yr 2 students really did manage to finish most of their work. There were felt foxgloves, a piano stool with a band of canvaswork stitches, fossil based work and much more. If you did not get there you missed a treat.

We will have a fantastic show next year with around 6 or 7 Part 1, Yr 2 students and 6 Part 2, Yr 2 students exhibiting final pieces. Can't wait. The Part 2 students have got a wide range of personal themes too, which should produce interesting work - Timble Ings, Robin Hoods Bay, Ferns, Sheep, Vegetables, and Elizabethan Embroidered Book Covers.

Stitching in the Dales 13-15 May 2009

What a fantastic two and a half days surrounded by beautiful countryside, excellent food and two very talented tutors in Linda Westerman and Sandra Kedzlie. Several branches were represented apart from Grassington and Skipton and everyone had a very creative time. The photograph above shows a scroll formed from layers of dyed muslin and cake wire, bonded together and enhanced with beads. It looks very chrysalis-like to me.

Those delegates with Linda Westerman were creating books and bookcovers in various forms under the title "Hidden Treasures" and Sandra Kedzlie's group learned how to make "Mixed Media Textured Surfaces" using such things as Lutrador, Magazine and Newspaper pages, Softsculpt, Kunin felt, etc.

Can't wait to see what Grassington and Skipton are putting on next year!

OUTING TO HARDWICK HALL

We have now become the Harrogate & District Ladies Mud Wrestling Team - at least that is what our larger than life coach driver told the staff at Hardwick Hall when we arrived for our visit. Needless to say everyone had an excellent day out. The weather was sunny, but windy and of course the display of embroidery at Hardwick Hall, as always, was fantastic.

The only sad point was that Heather Mason could not join us as she has had an accident and is in hospital waiting to have her left wrist pinned.

RAINBOW SQUARES

Visited the new exhibition at the Quilt Museum in York today and it is very good with a wide range of interpretations of the meaning of Pearl. It is on until 29 August and running alongside it is 'The Wholecloth Tradition' which has some excellent examples of traditional quilts.

July Meeting

Unfortunately, the speaker for the 11 July meeting has had to cancel, however, Kerry Mosley, a relatively new speaker, has agreed to come along instead. Her work is extremely interesting - she works with knitted wire and then stitches on top over dissolvable fabric to create hangings. She has a website which you might like to visit.

Nidderdale Workshop

Lynne Porter, a former member of Diverse Threads, led an excellent workshop "Artful Embroidery" on Saturday, 18 April for Nidderdale Branch of the Embroiderers' Guild. Landscape pictures formed the basis of individual designs with water soluble pencils and chiffon being used to paint the picture onto the fabric. Embroidery stitches were then added to create texture and line.

Three members of the Harrogate branch committee spent Sunday 15 March at a doll making workshop organised by Pauline Heywood with Chris Beavers of the York Branch. There was a choice of three types of doll to be constructed using either traditional stitching methods, a plastic bottle or a couple of twigs. The resulting outcomes were very interesting and no doubt several branches will be enjoying some doll making workshops later this year with their young embroiderers.

Peg Dolls

The Peg Doll competition proved to be very popular. Choosing a winner was a very difficult decision. Anne Curzon was eventually declared the winner following a second ballot. Leah Cox was second with this rather luxurious mermaid. Amongst the other dolls there were a fairy, Father Christmas, an Elizabethan doll, a Japanese doll, and a rather buxom lady dressed in black.

Everyone enjoyed a delicious buffet lunch at Russell Sergeant House to celebrate Christmas.
